First-year Friday: The Dreaded Weaknesses Question

File 702"Name some weaknesses you have."  I hate when these words come out of any potential employers mouth.  Aren't I supposed to focus on my strengths during interviews?  If so, then why do they ask me this question?

Employers like to know how well you know yourself.  For today's First-year Friday tip, I have a nifty trick that I learned to make your weakness work in your favor.  Turn your weakness into a strength.  "How?" you may ask.  Aren't weaknesses called weaknesses because they are the opposite of strengths?  Yes, they are.  But there is no trait that is all good or all bad.

Take a look at this example.  Weakness: Bossy

"A weakness I have is that I tend to get a bit bossy when working on group projects.  But, I am working on giving more space and time for others to step up to share their ideas and opinions. I make sure to let others speak first and give people the opportunity to take charge.  However, when the group is under a tight deadline I am usually the one that they turns to.  From there I can do my best to get everyone focused to complete the task, and doing so without coming across as demanding."

Think of all perspectives on your weaknesses and think of how they might also be turned into a strength.  But, most importantly, be sure to show that you're aware of the issue and working to change in a positive way.  Hiring managers know you're not perfect.  They just want to know you're focused on improving!

That's this week's First-year Friday Tip.  Have an awesome weekend!
