As a current first-year, whenever I heard of internship fairs or career fairs, I felt like I had plenty of time to go to one and worry about them later. Yet, especially if you’re like me and nervous about your future, or have questions about where you want your career to lead you, I encourage you to take baby steps and attend this upcoming internship fair. I think of an internship as gaining real world experience without having to step too much out of your comfort zone. It can be paid or unpaid, and you can work part-time or full-time. An internship will allow you to explore different avenues, see if you like what you’re doing before you commit to it. Also, if you like an internship you receive, the employer may be able to offer you a place in the company. If they can’t, you still will have gained invaluable experience and can use your employer as a reference.
So come on out to the Great Hall of the Student Union on January 26th from noon until 4pm. Dress in business casual, which means no jeans, tennis shoes, or t-shirts. Update your resume and bring multiple copies with you. If this is your first time, come with confidence and a smile. You may not find an internship that you love the first time around, but it never hurts to look. Just be yourself, and hope to see you there!
