The UNC Career Center invites employers to host on-campus or virtual information sessions to recruit UNC-Chapel Hill students. Information Sessions are opportunities for employers to engage with students both formally through presentations and informally through receptions and networking.
Steps to Request an Information Session
To request an information session, you’ll need to log in into your Handshake account or create a new one.
- Click “Create an Event.”
- Select your preferred start and end dates. Please note that we cannot guarantee date availability. If your requested date is unavailable, our team will contact you with alternative options.
- Under “Contact”, select the individual from your organization who will serve as the primary contact for the event.
- Choose “On-campus” if you plan to use one of the locations listed under Information Session Locations.
- Add “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill” as the hosting school and select “Main Career Center” as the career center host.
- When completing the event description, remember that this information will be visible to students. Provide a clear overview of the session, including details such as:
- Topics that will be covered
- Whether alumni or company representatives will attend
- Whether food or refreshments will be provided
- Whether registration is required
- Any other information that will help students understand what to expect
- Submit your request.
After submission, we will review your preferred date and location and do our best to accommodate your request. You will then receive an intake form to provide additional logistical information. Once the completed form is received, an invoice will be sent. After payment has been processed, your event will be approved and confirmed.
Be sure to keep an eye on your inbox for next steps and important updates from our team.
Virtual and Off-Campus Information Sessions
For any virtual or off-campus locations, follow the instructions listed above in the Steps to Request an Information Session. While creating your event in Handshake, under Location add the off-campus location or virtual link in the description.
Information Sessions Policy
These policies apply only to events coordinated through the Career Center. Other departments and campus partners may have separate policies and procedures.
- Reservations must be made at least 28 days (4 full weeks) before you plan to be on campus.
- All information session reservations should be made via Handshake by creating an event.
- To maximize student attendance and employer visibility, the Career Center permits only one information session or tabling event per day through our office. Reservations are approved on a first-come, first-served basis, and date availability is not guaranteed.
- You may offer food at your event, depending on the policies of your on-campus location. We recommend snack-type foods such as donuts, chips, and cookies.
- You are allotted up to a 4-hour time block for your session. If you are interested in booking additional time, please be aware that you will incur an additional fee.
- You may not move or change the location of your information session, as this will result in a fine.
- You may not block walkways in any way, as this will result in a fine.
Marketing Your Event
The UNC Career Center will promote your event through our student email campaigns and select social media channels. While we support event promotion, we cannot guarantee attendance. We strongly encourage employers to market their event through their own channels as well. Additional outreach strategies may include:
- Promoting the event on Handshake.
- Sharing it with relevant student organizations.
- Engaging campus ambassadors or alumni.
- Advertising it through your company’s social media platforms and recruiting networks.

Cancellation and No Show Policy
Organizations must provide at least three weeks’ notice to the Career Center to receive a full refund for a canceled event.
Cancellations made with less than three weeks’ notice, as well as no-shows, are not eligible for a refund. Any outstanding fees associated with the event will be charged to the organization’s account and must be paid in full before participating in future recruiting events or campus engagement activities.
Tips for Successful Information Sessions
- Schedule your event between Tuesday and Thursday, ideally between 4:00–8:00 p.m.
- Keep sessions concise. 60 to 90 minutes is recommended.
- Incorporate interactive elements such as Q&As, alumni panels, resume reviews, or networking opportunities.
- Bring UNC alumni or recent hires to help students connect with your organization.
- Offer refreshments or giveaways when possible to encourage attendance.
- Share insights about your company, culture, and opportunities beyond what students can find on your website.
- Promote your event through your own channels, including Handshake, social media, recruiters, alumni networks, and relevant student organizations.
- While the Career Center will help market your event, attendance cannot be guaranteed.
