10 areas for pre-interview research

Employers tell UCS that we need to prepare you better for your interviews with regard to researching the organizations and industries in which they operate.  So, here are ten areas of research you should undertake before any interview.

First investigate the organization in greater depth

  • 1.Services/programs provided and/or products produced
  • 2. Mission, vision, values
  • 3. Current events in life of organization
  • 4. Professional development/training
  • 5. Key measures/statistics; strengths/weaknesses compared to similar orgs.

Then, research similar organizations in the same industry

  • 6. Who stands out when you compare this employer to similar ones?
  • 7. Industry opportunities & challenges (legislation/public policy, crises, social/economic trends, effects of changes/shifts, controversy, court cases/rulings)

Finally, do some data mining for clues about the career field and job opening

  • 8. Job/internship description (yes, look over this one last time)
  • 9. Jobs/internships at similar organizations
  • 10. Higher level positions and related career paths

By doing this, you will be able to show that you are well-versed in their organization, the landscape of the competition and the industry overall.
