University Career Services is eager to assist
employers to interact with our students to inform and interest them in
career and internship opportunities. University Career Services offers
assistance to employers and individuals in accordance with the Principles
of Professional Conduct for Career Services Professionals outlined
by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Likewise,
UCS expects that employers act in accordance with the Principles
of Professional Conduct for Employment Professionals outlined by NACE.
These principles have guided our policy for university recruiting activities.
Given the current
unique business conditions, we feel it is necessary to revisit our job
acceptance guidelines and provide the flexibility that employers need
this year, while still providing some protection for our students. If
the current environment does not allow an employer to abide by our acceptance
date guidelines (see below), we have requested that, at minimum, students
be given 3 weeks from the date of the offer to make a decision. Students
who have already been extended an offer over three weeks ago should be
given a minimum of 10 days to make a decision.
UCS requests that you abide by the following
offer policy to allow our students sufficient time to carefully consider
their employment options and to make informed decisions.
Students should be given until November 7, 2009 to accept/decline offers
so that they may participate in fall on-campus recruiting.
-
Students graduating in May-August 2010 should be given until December
1, 2009 or a minimum of three weeks (whichever comes later) to accept/decline
offers.
Students graduating in December 2009 should be given a minimum of three
weeks from the date of the offer to accept/decline.
-
Students should be given until March 1, 2010 or a minimum of three weeks
(whichever comes later) to accept/decline offers
-
Students should be given until February 19, 2010 or a minimum of one
week (whichever comes later) to accept/decline offers.
UCS requests that you not make exploding offers to students
or make any offer that does not allow for timely consideration by our
students, as stated in the above guidelines.
In the spirit of collaboration, we hope that you will
inform us of any offers you make that must be withdrawn or significantly
changed and also that you let us know of any of our students who renege
on an acceptance of an internship or full-time job offer.
We request that no more than one recruiter interview a student at a
time. Exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance by the Director.
Employers with "straight commission" positions may request
UCS to reserve a room for a group presentation. We do not schedule individual
interview sessions for straight commission positions. Employers with
“straight commission” jobs may not attend UCS career fairs
with the exception of the Internship and Spring Fairs.
Third parties (employment agencies and search firms) may list openings
online; however, they may not recruit on-campus, receive student resume
referrals, or attend our career fairs. Contract recruiters may recruit
on-campus provided that they recruit for one employer only and identify
that employer.
Only Equal Opportunity Employers may use UNC facilities. Tests administered
on campus must be validated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Company representatives must conduct their own testing.
Interview and presentation facilities arranged by University Career
Services are to be used solely to speak with students from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who are eligible for service from University
Career Services. Exceptions to this policy must be requested of
the Director in advance of your visit. UCS has the right to request
names of candidates interviewed in instances where an organization is
setting-up its own schedule.
Employers recruiting at UNC-Chapel Hill are expected to adhere to the
National Association of Colleges and Employers Principles of Recruiting
and Employment. We will be glad to provide you with a copy of the Principles
upon request.
University Career Services at The University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill is committed to ensuring that all students, faculty and employers
are afforded every opportunity to participate in the activities offered
by this Office. If, due to a disability, you require accommodation to
utilize our services, please contact the office at (919)-962-6507 and
let us know how we may assist you.
All recruiting activities (except those related to MBA,
Master
of Accounting, Law,
Medical, and Dental programs) should
be arranged through UCS. Recruiting activity should take place in UCS’
facilities unless permission is granted by the Director of UCS.
Recruiting activities shall be understood to mean any formal
inquiry, request, or visit by an outside agency, business, institution,
or organization, the primary purpose of which is to interest students/alumni
in employment, independent contracting, service, or educational opportunity
with that agency, business, institution, or organization. Recruiting activities
include, but are not limited to: on-campus interviews, career fairs, presentations,
campus information tables, and opportunities advertised on university
bulletin boards or via university online services. Any classroom activity
related to recruiting must be done with permission of the faculty member.
Employers and individuals representing employment opportunities must meet
the following qualifications to use UCS services:
- Must adhere to federal and North Carolina state EEO guidelines.
- Must not solicit or sell their products or services during
the course of recruiting.
- Must fully disclose to UCS and students/alums the structure
of their compensation packages and business costs incurred up through
the first year of employment. This includes salary, duration of salary,
training allowance, incentive programs, stock options, commission structure,
benefits, and any costs borne by the employee/applicant/independent
contractor including testing, licenses, classes, travel expenses and
equipment.
- Must clearly indicate the employing organization name
and contact information on any flyers and must not overstate possible
compensation.
Employers/individuals may post employment/independent contracting
and straight commission opportunities on the UCS online posting site and
may offer group presentations scheduled by UCS. They may not conduct individual
campus interviews. Career Fair participation is determined by the policy
for the particular fair.
Final approval to use UCS’ facilities and services
rests with the Director of UCS and may be revoked if these policies or
the NACE Principles are violated. The permission to use UNC-Chapel Hill’s
facilities does not imply University approval or endorsement of the policies,
practices, or products/services of the recruiting organization/individual.
Very often, employers/individuals provide lecturers, films, speakers,
specialized assistance, and other forms of support to the educational
programs of UNC-Chapel Hill. Where these activities are not directly related
to the recruiting effort, it is understood that approval of arrangements
by University Career Services need not be sought. However, the cooperation
of faculty, students/alums, and employers/individuals in keeping UCS officials
informed of such developments is strongly encouraged as being in the best
interest of UNC Chapel Hill.
