New York Recruiting Alliance
(N.Y. Interview Day)

When: Monday, February 22, 2010
Where: New York City
Who: Laura Lane, Assistant Director

University Career Services (UCS) of UNC-CH has formed a consortium with the career offices of Northwestern University, University of Virginia, and Smith College to sponsor employment interviews in New York City on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010. The consortium is called the New York Recruiting Alliance. We will hold an information session for seniors interested in the New York Recruiting Alliance on Tuesday, November 10 at 3:00pm in 239B Hanes Hall.

The purpose of the program is to expand interview opportunities for students who are interested in the fields of advertising, publishing, legal research, public relations, market research, consulting, arts, and non-profit organizations. Most employers in these fields do not conduct on-campus recruiting.

We anticipate that fifteen-twenty employers in the fields mentioned will participate in the program. Participation means that the employer will be sent resumes of students from all four schools who are interested in interviewing with that employer; the employer will then select students from each school to interview in New York on February 22nd.

Which employers are participating?

Hundreds of organizations in advertising, publishing, the arts, non-profits, and law are now being contacted. A list of the participating employers will be available at UCS and on the NYRA home page in mid-December 2009 .

Are these interviews for real job openings?

Because many of these employers do not have structured training programs nor do they hire in large numbers, it is often difficult for them to predict in February whether they will actually have vacancies in May. Therefore, some of the interviews are more for the sake of information and contacts. The form on each employer which will be posted in our offices and on our homepage will indicate whether or not the employer is interviewing for actual vacancies. (Many students who have participated in the New York Recruiting Alliance have found even the "information interviews" to be extremely worthwhile. In some cases, these contacts resulted in a job offer later.)

How can students sign-up to participate?

  1. Students need to check the list of participating employers on the UCS website at http://careers.unc.edu or http://www.smith.edu/cdo/nyra  in mid-December (after December 14) and decide which organizations they are interested in. Cover letters are optional, but recommended.

  2. Register for the UCS Registration System, or, if you are already registered, update your profile. YOU MUST USE YOUR UNC EMAIL IN THE PROFILE.

  3. Log into the UCS Registration System and use the “Jump To” feature for the New York Recruiting Alliance. YOU MUST USE YOUR UNC EMAIL IN THE PROFILE. Once in the NYRA Career Services Management System, you can see which employers are interviewing and their job postings.

  4. Research industries, jobs, and organizations using Vault, Wetfeet, UCS Career Resource Room, company websites, etc. Find NYC alumni to conduct additional informational interviews while you are in New York City using the UCS Carolina Connection (and J-link for School of Journalism and Mass Communication Majors) or GAA Alumni Advisors.

  5. In the NYRA Career Services Management System, which can be accessed through the UCS registration system and the “Jump Feature,” you will submit a resume and/or other material(s) (cover letter, writing sample, unofficial transcript) electronically for each position in which you are interested. Complete the application process for all positions of interest by January 15, 2010 at 11:59pm.

  6. You will receive an email asking you to sign up for an interview or an alternate slot on January 26, 2010. Monday, February 1, 2010 is the deadline for pre-selected students to sign up for an interview slot and commit to interviews. Alternates can start signing up for a slot on February 2 at 12am. The deadline for alternates to sign up and commit to interviews is Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 11:59.

  7. Go to UCS and sign a statement of confirmation — a contract that states if you sign up for an interview slot you will be at the interview. Those selected for an interview should sign the form by February 2 and those selected as an alternate should sign the form by February 4. Should you not go to the interview or cancel at the last minute, your UCS privileges will be suspended. Be sure to pick up the "Instructions" hand-out in UCS when signing the contract.

  8. Additional interview spaces for interested students may open up 1-2 weeks before the program.

  9. Check the websites of employers with whom you are interviewing to prepare for your interview. We also suggest that you read career books in the UCS Resource Room on the industry for which you are interviewing (eg., advertising, publishing, etc.), if you are not knowledgeable about the field.

What about travel arrangements and costs?

Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs. We hope that you have a friend or relative with whom you can stay in N.Y. Another possibility is to get together with several UNC students and share a room at one of the nearby hotels. The Webster Hotel and Apartments for Women has low daily rates for job hunters, and you might also try some of the internet travel sites for a good hotel rate. Here are some additional ideas:

When and where are the interviews?

The interviews will be held between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010 at the American Management Association Conference Center (9th Floor, 1601 Broadway at 48th Street), in New York City. Due to space restrictions, several employers will be conducting interviews in the same room.

For pre-selects and alternates there will be a mandatory travel and information meeting on February 9, 2010

What if I change my mind about participating after dropping my resume?

PLEASE DO NOT DROP YOUR RESUME IF YOU ARE NOT SERIOUSLY COMMITTED TO PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM. If you are selected by one or more employer(s) and you sign up for interviews, you are obligating yourself to travel to N.Y. and interview on February 22rd. If an emergency occurs and you will be unable to interview after you have signed-up, please call UCS (919-962-6507) immediately. Any student who does not appear for a scheduled interview without notifying UCS in advance will be denied further use of the Office.
