Internships & Part-Time Jobs

StudentStudents work at internships and part-time jobs for many different reasons: to earn money, gain experience, test out a career choice, gain academic credit, etc. UCS can help you sort out your reasons and guide you through the process of finding a local part-time job or an internship.

We suggest that you start your search by reading the information below. If you wish to meet with our Student Employment Counselor or our Internship Coordinator, please use our online scheduling system.

Finding Your Internship

Finding an internship is not always as easy as searching a database and finding the perfect one. You will often have to go on a "treasure hunt" to find your the perfect match. The best places to start are the resources below. You may also find it helpful to review the handout, "Step-by-Step Guide to Finding an Internship" (also available in Word).

1) UCS Online Internship Database (must be registered with UCS)

  1. Log into the UCS database.
  2. Click on “Search jobs & internships” from the top menu
  3. Select “All Job/Internships/OCI positions” *
  4. Choose your area(s) of interest, select position type “internship,” and then browse through listings.

*Some organizations choose to interview students on campus. To review those positions, select show me “on-campus interview opportunities". Please be sure to carefully review the section about On-Campus Interviewing if you are planning to participate in this service.

2) Carolina i-leads

An on-line referral database of former internship opportunities and information about internships from Carolina students. Great for developing leads and contact information for a variety of organizations.

3) Networking/Creating Your Own……with UCS’ Help

Use all possible contacts to enhance your chances for finding an internship. These can include friends, family, co-workers, teachers, advisors, and contacts made through career programs (UCS career fairs, panels, etc.), activities/organizations, and previous work experiences. A great resource for networking is e-leads. If you are unsure of what to say when contacting a potential internship site, please review the networking section or consult the UCS Internship Coordinator to discuss the art of talking to professionals. (This is not cold-calling.)

4) Carolina Connection Alumni Database

An on-line resource of Carolina alumni, parents, and friends who have volunteered to assist UNC students with their career exploration and planning. Many have indicated an interest in providing internships. Please access the UCS website for this great resource at http://careers.unc.edu/internships/search.html.

5) Helpful Web Resources

A listing of over 350 helpful internship websites have been compiled to help you in your search. Examples include Internship Programs.com, Summer Housing Opportunities, TVJobs.com, InternAbroad.com, the Internship Database, and many more.

7) UCS Career Fairs and UCS Internship Fair

UCS Career Fairs held during the fall semester provide a great networking opportunity for students looking for internships. The UCS Internship Fair is held in late January. The purpose of the UCS Internship Fair is to provide a forum for students to meet with employers who provide internships. Last year more than 60 employers from all employment areas participated in this program. Please check with UCS for exact date, time, and location.
