INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES | US Opportunites

I. ADVENTURE JOBS

  • Adventure Education
    Guides lead a group of up to 13 teenagers through adventure trips such as backpacking, kayaking, surfing, rafting, sailing, etc. Programs are in western US< Hawaii, Alaska, British Columbia, Australia, Belize, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Fiji, France, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Tahiti, and Thailand.   • Backroads
    Backroads offers more than 150 different active-travel vacations including, bicycling, walking, hiking, and multi-sport journeys in more than 85 destinations around the world. (seasonal, paid)
  • Bombard Balloon Adventures
    Bombard Balloon Adventures engages guests in hot-air ballooning adventures throughout Europe each May through October as well as in Switzerland during the months of January and February. Along with balloon pilots, chefs, and guides, ground crew facilitates all the details of each ballooning adventure. (seasonal, paid)
  • Clipper Cruise Line
    Clipper Cruise Line’s fleet of small ships leads passengers and crew on several itineraries throughout the world. Must commit to one year. Entry positions include housekeepers, servers, galley assistants, and deckhands. (one year, paid)
  • International Field Studies
    IFS is a nonprofit organization that operates Forfar Field Station and a sailing program on Andros Island in the Bahamas (where you can find the world’s third-largest barrier reef.) Staff education and lead high school and college groups in natural science activities and perform routine maintenance on boats, vehicles, and the facility. Captain and first mate in sailing program live on the boat. (one year, paid)
  • Semester at Sea
    With Semester at Sea, you’ll watch 20-foot waves hit the bow of your “campus” (the MV Explorer), live with Chinese students in a dorm at the University of Beijing, stay at an “untouchable” village in India, lean about the life of the Masai while on safari in Kenya, attend Afro-Venezuelan drum workshop, or study topical rain forests while canoeing down the Amazon River. Staff positions include administrative assistant, assistant dean, AV/media coordinator, bursar, nurse, photographer, and many more. (3-4 months, paid)
  • Suntrek Tours
    Travel across the US, Canada, Mexico with a small group of adventure minded people in 15 passenger vans stocked with camping gear. Must complete one of Suntrek’s training camps. (4-6 months, paid)
  • US Navy MWR Training Branch
    The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Division of the U.S. navy provides a variety of recreational and leisure programs and services to the worldwide navy community of sailors, their families, military reservists, and retired personnel. MWR operates in 24 states in the U.S. and in thirteen countries. Programs begin in January, May, and September. (3 months, paid)
  • Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing
    With a focus on developing leadership, confidence, self-esteem, and teamwork for its participants (ages 9-19), Wilderness Adventures offers on-to-four week courses that involve everything from rock climbing and kayaking to cultural immersion and environmental education. First year leaders are based out of Virginia, although there are future opportunities of lead trips in West Virginia, Alaska, British Columbia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. Opportunities to extend seasonal contracts through November or year ‘round. (3+ months, paid)
  • Wilderness Inquiry
    Wilderness Inquiry is a nonprofit organization that focuses on getting individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to experience the natural world in destinations throughout the world. Trip leader positions are seasonal, December – April and June – September. (3-5 months, paid)
  • Wilderness Ventures
    Leads wilderness travel adventures for students between the ages of 13-20 to places such as US, Australia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Europe. (summer, paid)
  • The World Outdoors
    Tour leaders guide groups in backcountry biking, hiking, and multi-sport adventures in the US<
    Australia, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and New Zealand. (seasonal, paid)

II. CAMPS, RANCHES, AND RESORTS

  • Club Med-North America
    Club Med is the pioneer of the all-inclusive resort. Must commit to 6 months; the summer season starts in May and the winter season begins in November. Positions in USA, Bahamas, Caribbean, and Mexico. (6 months +, paid)

III. JOBS IN THE NATURAL WORLD

  • The School for Field Studies
    The School for Field Study (SFS) is the country’s oldest and largest educational institution exclusively dedicated to teaching and engaging undergraduates in environmental problem solving. Placements are offered in Australia, Costa Rica, Kenya, Mexico and the Turks and Caicos Island. Internships are available for college graduates. (one year, paid)

IV. SUSTAINABLE LIVING AND FARMING OPPORTUNITIES

  • Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization
    ECHO cultivates one of the largest collections of tropical food plants in the U.S. The 50 acre farm serves as a training facility for interns, as an educational tool for public tours, and as a production farm for seed and nursery plants. After 12 months in Florida, interns can spend three month cross-cultural experience in Haiti. (12-15 months, paid)
  • International Agricultural Exchange Association
    IAEA and a network of past trainees and host families connect participants to farming and agriculture jobs in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, western Europe, the United Kingdom, and the US. (4-12months, paid)
  • Losang Dragpa Centre
    Losang Dragpa Buddhist Centre, located in an unusual and picturesque Victorian castle surrounded by 24 acres is a college and retreat centre that is home to 35 growing lay and ordained Buddhists of all ages and backgrounds. Center provides place to learn about Buddhism. In exchange for 35 hours a week on projects, participants receive food, warm and cozy dorm style accommodations, and meditation sessions and evening classes. (seasonal,volunteer)
  • MAST International Experience Abroad
    MAST International offers those between the ages of 18-30 the opportunity to participate in 12-18 month training assignments in agriculture, horticulture, or forestry in 18 countries around the globe. There is a $400 program fee (airfare, insurance, visa, personal expenses, and in country program fees are additional.) (3-12 months)
  • Willing Workers of Organic Farms
    Check the website to learn about volunteer opportunities on organic farms around the world.

V. HEARTFELT WORK

  • Brethren Volunteer Service
    BVS give volunteers a variety of programs (more than 150) in 24 states and in 17 countries. Volunteers begin with a 3 week orientation. Positions in US require one year commitment; overseas positions require two years. Volunteers receive room, board, medical coverage, life insurance, transportation to and from the project, a monthly allowance of $60, and an annual retreat. The financial costs include transportation to the orientation and an overseas travel fee of $500.Some projects qualify for an AmericCorps education award. (1-2 years, paid)
  • Camphill Association of North America
    Camphill is a way of life. There are no shifts, salaries, no relative values placed on people according to the nature of the work they do. There are plenty of jobs to be done and tasks are undertaken for the good of the whole. Whether you are looking for an internship opportunity, a formal training program, a short-term volunteer experience, or a new fully committed life-style, Camphill offers a variety of time frames and commitments. Co workers receive room and board and a monthly stipend for personal expenses. Those who provide a year of experience may be eligible for an AmeriCorps educational award of $4,725. (3-12+ months, paid)
  • Catholic Network Volunteer Service
    CNVS publishes an annual directory of volunteer opportunities that includes over 200 faith-based, full-time volunteer programs in the U.S. and more than 100 countries. Each program has its own combination of benefits and compensations; most include a stipend, room and board, and health insurance. (2 weeks - 2years+, paid)
  • Congressional Hunger Center
    the Bill Emerson Hunger Fellows Program, a program of the Congressional Hunger Center, helps to make an impact by developing leaders in the fight against hunger. 24 participants are selected each year for the 12 month program. 6 month placement in grassroots organization in US and then 6 months are spent in D.C. Afterwards, 2 year international fellows program with placement in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America and theCaribbean. Modest living allowance that averages $10,000 for the year. Benefits include health insurance, relocation stipends, and an end of service cash award of $3,500. Housing and travel to assignments is provided. (1-3 years, paid)
  • Habitat for Humanity, Global Village Program

  • Jesuit Volunteers International
    Volunteers abroad have the opportunity to teach a variety of subjects, coach sports teams, provide pastoral support, counsel children and families, and work in a variety of other placements. Housing, utilities, a food stipend, transportation to and from work, medical insurance, and a small monthly stipend are provided. (1-2 years, paid)
  • Mercy Ships
    Non-profit Christian humanitarian organization committed to a threefold purpose of mercy and relief, training and ministry. Provides medical care in more than 75 port cities. Openings as deck hand, baker, administrative, carpenters, and translators. (2 weeks – 2 years)
  • Avodah
    The Jewish Service Corps integrates work for social change, Jewish learning, and community building.

VI. Volunteer Opportunities

  • Amerispan Unlimited
    Volunteer/internship program offers a wide variety of work in Latin America and Spain. Two- to –six month placements are offered in social work, education, and ESL teaching, health care, environmental programs, and student services. Volunteers participate in 1-4 week cultural training. Fee to participate in this program. (2-6 months +)
  • Amigos De Las Americas
    Program begins with 6 month training program in both US and Latin America. Volunteers are assigned to ongoing health, community-development, and environmental programs partnered with sponsoring agencies in the host countries.
    The program fee is $3,650 and includes round trip airfare, training materials, orientation, etc. Scholarships up to $800 available. (6-8 months)
  • Amizade
    Volunteers work with local community to complete a community-identified project that addresses needs in education, environment, or health and well being. Sites abroad include Brazilian Amazon, Bolivian Andes, Australia, Nepal, Ghana, Jamaica, Ireland, Poland and Germany. Program fee ranges from $530 for one week in Yellowstone to up to $2,110 for three weeks in Nepal. (1 week – 1 year)

VII. Other Opportunities

  • BUNAC
    The British Universities North America Club provides US full time students with the coveted Blue Card, allowing participants to obtain paid work experiences for a maximum of six months in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Students receive information re: living accommodations and employer listings for a fee of $275. There are also opportunities in Peru, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Suggested that students bring at least $1000 to cover personal and living expenses prior to receiving their first paycheck. (1-12 months, paid)
  • CDS International
    CDS (Carl Duisbuer Society) International is a non profit organization dedicated to developing and enhancing opportunities for Americans to participate in meaningful, practical training opportunities in Argentina, Germany, Russia,
    Spain and Switzerland. CDS provides visa sponsorship and internship placement services as well as study tours and seminars. CDS offers three programs. Visit website to learn about each. Fees range from $300 to $1000 depending upon the program. Many internship placements are paid, which cover basic living expenses abroad. (3-18 months, paid)
  • CIEE
    Council on International Educational Exchange helps students find positions in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. CIEE provides job leads, apartment listings, and contacts to set working and living arrangements. Most participants find short term or seasonal service positions. Program fee ranges from 4350-$450. CIEE offers a Global Volunteers Projects program that is a 2-4 week work camp experience. CIEE also offers a Teach in China and Thailand program, which is a salaried position. (2 weeks – 10 months, paid)

    A biodynamic, horse-powered intentional farm community in the hills of New Hampshire. (1 year, paid)

  • Center for Student Missions
    Youth ministry to bridge the gap between suburban/rural people and city people in seven major cities throughout the US and Toronto, Canada (3-11 months, paid)
  • Congressional Hunger Center
    Develops leaders in the fight against hunger. Throughout US (6 months) and in DC (6 months). (1 year, paid)
  • Jesuit Volunteers
    Volunteers serve the homeless, unemployed, refugees, people with AIDS, elderly, street youth, abused women and children, mentally ill and developmentally disabled. (1-2 years, paid)
  • Amelia Island Plantation
    AIP is a 1350 acre resort in Florida and private residential community. Positions in a variety of resort area, including accommodations, aquatics, conference services, culinary, etc. Weekly housing stipend of $250 and two meals per workday are provided for most positions; others are paid an hourly wage. Internships are offered for college juniors and seniors. (4-12 months, paid)
  • Chingachgook YMCA Outdoor Center and Camp
    (Pronounced chin-ja-cook), located on spectacular Lake George in the New York Adirondacks, provides year-round programs for children and young adults. (3-9 months, paid)
  • Club Med
    Pioneer in all-inclusive resorts. G.O. (gentils organisateurs), do everything to make the GMs (gentils membres) have a great vacation.
  • Eckerd Youth Alternatives
    Over a 2 year period, wilderness youth counselors supervise a group of ten to twelve at-risk youths 24 hours a day. (2 years, paid)
  • Mountain Trial Outdoor School
    Outdoor education wing of Kanuga Conference Center, a nonprofit conference and retreat center affiliated with the Episcopal Church. (3-5 months, paid)
  • Bear Mountain Valley Resort
    Just one of many ski resorts in California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Maine, etc with seasonal position.
  • Teach for America
  • Spring Lake Ranch
    Small therapeutic work community where residents decide to come because stress, breakdown, or illness has interrupted the normal progress of their lives. House advisor/work crew leaders are responsible for the residents with whom they share a living space. They also lead and participate in a variety of tasks and activities. (6 months – 2 years, paid)
  • Population Connection Fellowship Program
    Population Connection deals with both the causes and the effects of over-population, addressing issues ranging from supporting international family planning to suburban sprawl to contraceptive coverage by insurance policies. Fellowships are full-time and are offered two sessions. (51/2 months, paid)
  • The Population Institute
    Small nonprofit on Capitol Hill where recent college graduates from around the world develop interpersonal, organizational, public relations, and writing skills will learning about problems faced by nations around the world as a result of overpopulation. Future Leaders of the World (FLW) program pays $2,000 per month with medical insurance and paid vacation. (1 year, paid)
