UCS recommends the following step-by-step
strategy for finding employment:
- Attend UCS workshops on Resume
Writing, Interviewing, and the UCS Orientation
for basics on the job search and how to best use UCS.
- Register with UCS.
- Draft a resume,
have it critiqued by a UCS counselor, and upload
it into the UCS registration database.
- Use UCS resources to
draft a well-constructed basic cover
letter that you
can then tailor to each employer to which you apply.
- Make an appointment
with a UCS counselor, and consider
attending a Career Clinic
to identify your skills, interests and values.
- Browse UCS’ on-campus
recruiting & job listings pages. Submit
your resume to
as many employers conducting interviews on-campus
as possible.
- Prepare well before each interview.

and interview tips material
can help you.
- Send a typed
thank you letter promptly after each interviews to improve your
odds of getting a job offer.
- Attend UCS career fairs,
panels, and employer presentations to explore employment possibilities.
- Use UCS’ databases of employers and job leads
such as CareerSearch,
Reference
USA, and E-leads
to find potential employers.
- Search other websites
with entry-level jobs for upcoming and recent college grads. For more
help conducting an effective search on the web, take a look at Using
the Internet in Your Job Search (handout also available in Word).
- Identify contacts through
UCS’ networking nights and the UCS Carolina
Connection (alumni volunteers who
have indicated an interest in helping
you).
- Read UCS handouts
available in the UCS
Resource Room on networking,
telephone interview tips, jobs related to various majors, etc.
- See UCS
information and talk with a UCS counselor
for assistance with evaluating an offer,
comparing multiple offers,
and accepting or declining an offer.
- Still looking for a job? Brainstorm alternatives
during an appointment
with a UCS Counselor.
