As a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) student preparing for entry into the workforce, you may find yourself faced with additional career planning challenges related to your sexual orientation. For the most part, university life has been a supportive environment, with a wonderful LGBT resource center, active student groups, and university-backed non-discrimination policies. The workplace can be quite different, in terms of the openness of and support for LGBT employees. The following collection of resources is designed to offer a starting point in considering issues faced by LGBT people in the workplace. There are no hard and fast rules, so you should feel free to address questions on coming out at work and during the job search to career counselors at University Career Services.

At UCS we value the diversity represented by our student population and are committed to providing the best service possible to all students. As part of this commitment, all UCS staff members have received training specific to working with LGBT students. You can also find LGBT career related publications such as "The Lavender Road to Success" and "The Corporate Equality Index" in our Resource Room.

Diversity Career Fair

Held in September, this event brings various organizations representing business, industry, non-profit, and government agencies to Carolina to meet our students. Employers look forward to this opportunity to meet students from diverse populations. Seniors can inquire about job openings and submit resumes to employer representatives. Juniors can seek out internships. First year students and sophomores can learn about career fields and how to best prepare for them. Look on the UCS website to view organizations attending the Diversity Career Fair and their position descriptions.

UCS offers eight additional fairs throughout the year as well as career panels and networking nights. Please review our complete listing of UCS events.
