Diversity in the Career Search:
Resources for Specific Populations
Welcome to UNC! We are glad that you are here. We strongly
encourage you to use everything University Career Services (UCS) has to
offer you during your experience at Carolina.
Your first step is to register
with UCS. This will give you access to internship and job postings
specifically for UNC students, campus interviews, special databases and
other resources, and emails regarding upcoming career programs and events.
- Business Etiquette Dinner
Generally offered early in the spring semester. Transfer students will
receive a special invitation with instructions on how to sign up for
this dinner close to the scheduled date.
- Check out the Program Schedule
for a complete list of workshops, panels, networking nights, and career
fairs. Programs cover job search skills, including writing resumes,
interviewing, and how and where to job search; preparing and searching
for internships; networking; finding a job in the Federal Government,
teaching English abroad; international internships and many more.
The resume is your most important marketing tool! UCS has
several resources to help you build an effective resume.
- Use Optimal Resume,
a resume creation tool, to develop your resume.
- See the resume handout and samples in the “Resumes
and Letters” section of our website.
- Review the sample Tranfer Student Resume
(also available in Word).
- Review the resume writing resources available in our Career
Resource Room.
You may either list the GPA from UNC and from your previous
school/s separately, or you may combine your UNC and previous school GPA's.
If you choose to combine the GPA's, you must indicate on your resume that
you have done so. Following is the formula for calculating combined GPA:
- [(# of credit hours from previous college) X (GPA at previous college)]
+ [(# of credit hours completed so far at UNC) X (GPA at UNC)] = SUM
- SUM divided by total credit hours from both colleges = combined GPA
Example: (30 credits X 3.4) + (30 credits X 3.1) = 102 + 93= 195
195/60= 3.25 combined GPA
Don't forget to explore all the resources available on
our website. Our website is divided into 4 main categories:
- Undecided
Maybe you have declared a major and aren’t sure what you are going
to do with it or perhaps you want to change majors. Either way, the
UCS website gives you resources for major and career exploration. You
may choose to take the Strong
Interest Inventory, an assessment that can help you explore careers
based on your interests. Make an appointment
with a UCS Career Counselor to have your inventory interpreted or sign
up to attend a Career Clinic.
- Research and Explore Careers
Search and explore databases for employer information, networking contacts,
internship and job leads, and listings of employers. You’ll find
the following databases and websites in Research and Explore Careers:
- Internships and Part-time Jobs
Search listings of part-time jobs and internships on campus, locally,
and nationally; explore websites
with related openings; and find information on summer
housing in various cities.
- Your Job Search

and cover letter, interviewing,

"I
did not seek out help from UCS until the semester (my LAST semester) was
2 months from being over! UCS helped me get my resume formatted correctly
and also offered other advice for job searching to job interviews. After
visiting with UCS and seeing all the workshops and other opportunities
that would have helped my job search and preparation, I regretted that
I had not come to UCS earlier in my college career. My advice to transfer
students would be to get signed up at UCS right away and get involved
in workshops that are going to put you way ahead of other students going
into your senior year when many begin searching and applying for jobs."
--Nathan Patterson, B.S., Biology, 2007, Transferred from
Alamance Community College
“Now
that you are a Tar Heel, you can be sure you will receive a great education.
What about your career? Rest assured that when you are ready to think
about it, counselors at UCS will help you. It doesn't matter if you already
know what you want but don't know how to get it or if you are exploring
career options for the first time. Advisors are very patient and they
do know what they are talking about. Need proof? The first semester I
transferred I found two of my jobs through the online database. You will
be next!”
--Agata Rocka, B.S., Business Administration, 2008, Transferred
from Durham Technical Community College
"The UNC Career
Services staff helped me understand how employers search for qualified
staff, then gave me great advice on how to present my qualifications,
experience and personal qualities in the most effective way.
My advice is to establish and maintain a working relationship
with UNC Career Services folks as soon as you arrive on campus. Don't
waste one moment to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from them."
--Michael Abramowitz, B.A., Journalism and Mass Communication,
2007, Transferred from Vance-Granville Community College
“Carolina
has made an excellent career service center available to students. Since
transferring to Chapel Hill, the UCS has helped me strengthen the quality
of my resume and cover letter as well as connected me to established alumni
in my field of interest.”
--Chris Lao, B.S., Business Administration, 2008, Transferred
from UNC-Charlotte
“Career Services
made it easy for me, as a transfer student, to get acquainted with the
internship process and provided valuable contacts in my field.”
--Theresa Klimas, B.S., Business Administration, 2008,
Transferred from Western Washington University
