Resumes & Letters: References

Resumes | Cover Letters | Thank You Letters
Other Correspondence | References

The last section of your resume may state References: Available upon request. Do not send an actual list of references to employers with your resume unless the employer requests it. Do not list the names of your references on your resume.

Many employers do not follow-up with references. Those who do usually call the reference for information, but may also contact them by mail or email.

Ask Permission First
Be sure to ask each reference if you may use them as a reference. Tell them the types of employers who may be contacting them. Give each reference a copy of your resume so they are familiar with all your experience and activities.

Choose Wisely
Do not ask someone to serve as a reference who does not know your qualifications well or who you are not sure will give you a positive reference.

Reference List
Develop a page with the names, titles, and contact information of each of your references. Use the same paper that you use for your resume. See the Reference Page Sample.

UCS Reference File Service
A UCS reference file may be established by UNC students/alumni applying for positions in education, college teaching, library science, social work, health sciences, public history, public administration, and city and regional planning and for applying to graduate and professional schools. (If you have established a reference file with UCS, you may check on Your Job Search: Reference File Service to see if your references have arrived.)
