Professional Dress Attire: Shopping on a Budget 

Style For Success 

Styled for Success provides funding (up to $700) for professional attire to UNC juniors and seniors receiving need-based financial aid and actively involved in an internship or job search. 

To qualify for the stipend, please complete the following steps: 

  • Compile an itemized list of purchased or planned clothing. 
  • Complete the application, including the Focus 2 assessment. 
  • Attend the orientation. 

Check Out Local Thrift Stores 

Local options include CommunityWorx, Durham Rescue Mission Thrift, Goodwill, or Chatham PTA Thrift Shop – Cole Park. 

Check out online thrift platforms such as Poshmark, ThredUp, and Mercari often have gently used blazers, dress shoes, and slacks at major discounts. 

Shop at stores with student discounts.  Some stores may offer anywhere from 10% to 20%.  

  • Examples can include J.Crew Factory, Banana Republic, ASOS, H&M, and Express. 

When shopping, stick with neutral colors for flexibility and timelessness. 

Invest in versatile essentials that can be mixed and matched: 

  1. Black or navy blazer 
  1. White button-down shirt or blouse 
  1. Neutral slacks or skirt 
  1. Simple black or brown shoes
