Who

All undergraduate students at UNC interested in enhancing their personal and professional development skills are eligible to participate in the UCS Carolina Career Readiness Certificate. This Certificate leverages and operationalizes the UCS Four Steps to Career Success Model. Sophomore and Junior Students pursuing Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Majors are strongly encouraged to participate. This Certificate is primarily for students who lack any pre-professional college work experience defined as work experiences related to their academic major or career goal. Note: Certificate requirements can be completed in one semester. However, additional time can be approved up to three semesters if necessary.

What

On a completely voluntary basis, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to receive a UCS Career Readiness Certificate that certifies having completed the requirements for being NACE Career Ready and prepared to clearly articulate their value proposition and employability to employers.

Where

The majority of workshops and events are offered through University Career Services, and will be virtual and in-person. Please check Handshake for event details.

Why

While the Carolina Career Readiness Certificate is open to all undergraduate students at UNC, it is especially beneficial for students in interdisciplinary and liberal arts majors. We find that these students are typically challenged to clearly communicate their transferrable skills and academic learning outcomes in ways that resonate with recruiters seeking to fill in-demand jobs and internships. The Carolina Career Readiness Certificate provides a means for students in those majors to be competitive for the in-demand jobs in North Carolina and beyond, position themselves for a future internship, full-time job opportunity, startup venture, or graduate school.

How

Tracking:

Students participating in the Carolina Career Readiness Certificate activities are personally responsible for tracking their own progress. University Career Services will use Handshake, Heel Life, and other tools to facilitate assignment completions so it is important that participants log into events using their UNC credentials in order for attendance to be tracked, and for assignments to be submitted.

Note: Upon application to receive the Carolina Career Readiness Certificate, your participation and completion of required assignments is checked based on electronic attendance and submission records. Misrepresenting your participation in this credential program may result in a violation of the University Honor Code. For any questions about these requirements, please contact Kelsey Durham, Kelsey.Durham@unc.edu.

University Honor Code

It shall be the responsibility of every student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to obey and support the enforcement of the Honor Code. The Honor Code prohibits lying, cheating, or stealing when these actions involve academic processes or university, student, or academic personnel acting in an official capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many activities are required?

The Carolina Career Readiness Certificate is designed to be self-directed. You must complete all of the required activities plus one of the optional Job Function Pathways in order to be eligible to receive your Certificate that covers the four categories (i.e., Self-Awareness, Career Exploration, Experiential Learning/High Impact Experiences, Self-Marketing/Professional Branding).

How is attendance tracked?

Log in to all University Career Services activities using your UNC credentials on Handshake and Heel Life. For upcoming fairs, follow registration instructions through Handshake. For events and activities, register on Handshake or Heel Life and check-in using the available kiosks (when applicable).

What if I’m not interested in the designated Job Function Pathways?

The pathway activities can be completed through any of the UCS-facilitated programs: 1) JLD Program for Part-Time Jobs, 2) UCS Micro-Internship Program, and 3) Parker Dewey Micro-Internship Platform. A minimum of one of the listed Job Function Pathways must be completed in order to be eligible to obtain the Certificate. However, students are welcome to identify and complete additional job function pathway experiences listed on the platform that more closely align with their professional interests.

Does participation guarantee me a job at the companies that support this Certificate?

No. However, it does guarantee that you will receive an interview if you earn the credential. We have established that protocol with the participating companies and continue to add to that list each year.

I have a conflict with an event, is there a makeup time?

Most events will be offered in fall semester and in spring semester, with possible virtual recordings for future access. Keep an eye on the Handshake calendar and the UCS News and Events site for details.
