Who

All undergraduate students in any School Year at UNC currently holding part-time jobs who are interested in enhancing their personal and professional development are eligible to participate in the UCS Professional Internship Experience Certificate. This program is primarily for students who want to enhance the relevance of their pre-professional college work experience to align with their academic major or career goal. Note: Certificate requirements must be completed within two semesters.

What

On a completely voluntary basis, undergraduate students currently holding part-time jobs will have the opportunity to receive a UCS Certificate that certifies having completed the requirements to convert their part-time jobs into Professional Internship Experiences through participation in a series of workshops and activities designated by University Career Services.

Where

The majority of workshops and events are offered through University Career Services, and will be virtual and in-person. Please check Handshake for event details.

Why

Students who work part-time jobs are not always able to participate in Summer Internships or Academic Year Internships that align more closely with their career goals and majors. Additionally, students holding part-time jobs are not always able to clearly identify and communicate the myriad transferrable skills learned when speaking with recruiters at Fairs, Networking Events, or Interviews. The Professional Internship Experience Certificate provides a means for students to maximize their part-time jobs to position themselves for a future internship, full-time job opportunity, startup venture, or graduate school.

How

Tracking:

Students participating in Professional Internship Experience Certificate activities are personally responsible for tracking their own progress. University Career Services will use Handshake and other tools to facilitate assignment completions so it is important that participants log into events using their UNC certificates in order for attendance to be tracked, and for assignments to be submitted.

Note: Upon application to receive the Professional Internship Experience Certificate, your participation and completion of required assignments is checked based on electronic attendance and submission records. Misrepresenting your participation in this certificate program may result in a violation of the University Honor Code. For any questions about these requirements, please contact Roderick Lewis, Roderick.Lewis@unc.edu.

University Honor Code:

It shall be the responsibility of every student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to obey and support the enforcement of the Honor Code. The Honor Code prohibits lying, cheating, or stealing when these actions involve academic processes or university, student, or academic personnel acting in an official capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many activities are required?

The Professional Internship Experience Certificate is designed to be self-directed. You must complete all of the required activities plus one of the options in order to be eligible to receive your certificate that covers the three categories (i.e., Perform, Develop, and Position).

How is attendance tracked?

Log in to all University Career Services virtual workshops through Zoom using your UNC certificates. For virtual fairs, follow registration instructions through Handshake. For in-person events and activities, register on Handshake and check-in using the available kiosks.

What if I’m not interested in the designated virtual Job Function Work Experiences?

These activities will take place using the Forage Virtual Work Experiences Platform. A minimum of one of the listed virtual Job Function Work Experiences must be completed in order to be eligible to obtain the certificate. However, students are welcome to identify and complete additional virtual work experiences listed on the platform based on their professional interests.

Does participation guarantee me a job at the companies that support this certificate?

No. However, it does guarantee that you will receive an interview if you earn the certificate. We have established that protocol with the participating companies and continue to add to that list each year.

I have a conflict with an event, is there a makeup time?

Most events will be offered in fall and spring semesters, with possible virtual recordings for future access. Keep an eye on the Handshake calendar and the UCS News and Events site for details.
