In Spring 2025, UNC Career Center changed its name (formerly University Career Services) to emphasize our modern approach to career development.
Part of that approach is embracing the use of new tech tools, like AI.
Generative AI, like ChatGPT or Copilot, has become mainstream in most of our lives today. Just like AI can recommend books to read or what to cook with a list of ingredients, it can be an important tool to support elements of your job or internship search.
- AI can help streamline job searches by analyzing job descriptions for skills that map to your experience.
- With the right prompts, AI can help you start tailoring resumes or cover letters.
- It can help you research companies that match your interests.
- Combine AI efficiency with personal networking and authentic storytelling to stand out and make informed career decisions
As with any automated tool, we recommend learning how to use AI effectively and safely. In October, UNC Career Center is holding four workshops that will guide you through using AI for career development:
- Monday, Oct. 6 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ChatGPT and Career Exploration
This one-hour workshop will teach you to use ChapGPT to explore industries, job roles, and career paths aligned with your skills and interests. You will learn effective prompts and strategies to guide your self-discovery process. - Wednesday, October. 8 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. ChatGPT and Resumes/Cover Letters
Learn how ChatGPT can help you tailor your resume and cover letters to specific jobs. You will explore prompt strategies to highlight your strengths and customize your application materials. - Thursday, Oct. 8 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ChatGPT and Interview Prep
Explore how ChatGPT can support your interview preparation, from generating practice questions to refining your responses. You’ll walk away with AI-powered techniques to boost your confidence and readiness. - Monday, Oct. 13 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Leveraging Technology for Job Search
Discover how to leverage tech tools to explore majors, match careers to your interests/goals, and search for your ideal job or internship.
Some important considerations when using AI:
- AI is never a substitute for your good judgement, creativity, and lived experiences. Always check suggested language for accuracy and that the finished product reflects your personal voice and brand.
- Do not share personal details such as name and contact information from your resume or cover letter draft before submitting it to an AI tool. Never share any sensitive data, intellectual property, or confidential information.
- Some companies have policies about use of AI, so do your research.
- AI tools use cached information to provide quick responses, so make sure you verify information about companies if you are using AI to help you research potential opportunities.
