Tabling

The UNC Career Center offers both tabling and information sessions as methods of recruiting UNC-Chapel Hill students. Tabling is an informal way for employers to connect with students in a high-traffic area such as the Student Union, where students can stop by and learn more about their organization.

Policies for Tabling

These policies apply only to events coordinated through the Career Center. Other departments and campus partners may have separate policies and procedures.

  • Reservations must be made at least 28 days (4 full weeks) before you plan to be on campus.
  • All tabling reservations should be made via Handshake by creating an event.
  • To maximize student attendance and employer visibility, the Career Center permits only one information session or tabling event per day through our office. Reservations are approved on a first-come, first-served basis, and date availability is not guaranteed.
  • You may offer food at your event, depending on the policies of your on-campus location. We recommend snack-type foods such as donuts, chips, and cookies.
  • You are allotted up to a 4-hour time block for your session. If you are interested in booking additional time, please be aware that you will incur an additional fee.
  • You may not move or change the location of your table, as this will incur a fine.
  • You may not block walkways in any way, as this will incur a fine.

Fees for Tabling in the Student Union

  • $150 Standard Rate
  • $125 UNC-Chapel Hill Affiliated Groups
    • Academic Departments
    • Professional Schools
    • Student Organizations
    • Student Affairs Departments

Cancellation and No-Show Policy

Organizations must provide at least three weeks’ notice to the Career Center to receive a full refund for a canceled event.

Cancellations made with less than three weeks’ notice, as well as no-shows, are not eligible for a refund. Any outstanding fees associated with the event will be charged to the organization’s account and must be paid in full before participating in future recruiting events or campus engagement activities.

Steps to Request a Tabling Session

To reserve a table, please log in into your Handshake account or create a new one:

  • Click “Create an Event.”
  • Select your preferred start and end dates. Please note that we cannot guarantee date availability. If your requested date is unavailable, our team will contact you with alternative options.
  • Under “Contact”, select the individual from your organization who will serve as the primary contact for the event.
  • Choose “On-campus” if you plan to use one of the locations listed under Tabling Locations.
  • Add “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill” as the hosting school and select “Main Career Center” as the career center host.
  • When completing the event description, remember that this information will be visible to students. Provide a clear overview of the session, including details such as:
    • Topics that will be covered
    • Whether alumni or company representatives will attend
    • Whether food, refreshments, or swag will be provided
    • Any other information that will help students understand what to expect
  • Submit your request.

After submission, we will review your preferred date and location and do our best to accommodate your request. You will then receive an intake form to provide additional logistical information. Once the completed form is received, an invoice will be sent. After payment has been processed, your event will be approved and confirmed.

Be sure to keep an eye on your inbox for next steps and important updates from our team.

Tips for Successful Tabling

Given the myriad activities competing for the attention of today’s college students, brevity and repeatability are key, and employers should develop “grab and go” collateral to give to students as they engage with you. Consider the following tips to maximize your employer brand, visibility, and connection with potential student recruits.

  • Place QR codes on your collateral that links to website information for college students.
  • Make sure your collateral is poster card size and showcases what makes your company great, benefits, and job opportunities.
  • Make sure your information is relevant to a wide variety of academic majors.
  • Include direct contact information (email, LinkedIn, etc.) of recruiters who are committed to responding to students.
  • Gamify the your information table by offering students a chance to win cool prizes (gift cards, snack food, etc.).
