How to Craft an Elevator Pitch

WHAT IS AN ELEVATOR PITCH?

An elevator pitch is a 30–60 second introduction that tells someone:

  • Who you are
  • What you’ve done
  • What you’re interested in doing next
  • It’s commonly used in networking conversations, career fairs, LinkedIn messages, and informational interviews.

You can use your elevator pitch in many situations and contexts such as networking events and info sessions, career fairs and employer meet-ups, or even on LinkedIn or HeelsEngage when reaching out for informational interviews!

STRUCTURE: PRESENT – PAST – FUTURE

A simple and effective structure for your pitch:

  • Present – Who you are, your major, and what you’re currently doing
  • Past – A highlight from your background, such as a job, internship, or student org
  • Future – What you’re interested in or where you’re hoping to go next

EXAMPLE ELEVATOR PITCH

“Hi, I’m Amy, a graduating UNC BSPH student with a background in reproductive health advocacy and a goal of working abroad. I noticed your great experiences and would love to learn more about your professional journey.”

Another example:

“Hi, I’m Jordan, a junior majoring in Political Science at UNC. I’ve interned with a local nonprofit focused on housing policy, and I’m hoping to explore careers related to public service or law after graduation.”

TIPS TO REMEMBER

  • Be specific but concise – Focus on one or two experiences or goals.
  • Be authentic – Let your enthusiasm and interest show.
  • Tailor your pitch – Mention something relevant to the person you’re speaking with.
  • Practice – Try saying it out loud or in front of a mirror before using it in real situations.
