Whether you’re exploring career options, looking for internships, or figuring out your next step, networking is one of the most valuable tools you can use. It’s not just about who you know—it’s about who you can learn from.
Think of networking as starting conversations that help you grow. You don’t need to have all the answers—you just need to be curious and open to connecting.
WHY DOES NETWORKING MATTER?
Networking = relationship-building. It’s about making connections to learn, share, and grow professionally—not just asking for a job. Great connections can lead to insights, opportunities, and support in your career journey.
You are probably already networking with: Professors & TAs, classmates & student organization peers, internship supervisors, friends & family
BEFORE YOU START
Ask yourself:
- What are my career goals?
- What career fields and industries do I want to learn more about?
- What skills do I want to develop?
- Who do I already know (friends, professors, supervisors)?
Networking can happen in many places: career fairs, LinkedIn, student orgs, job shadowing, or class connections.
4 STEPS TO BUILD YOUR NETWORK
1. Set Your Priorities
Figure out what you want to learn—about an industry, a role, or someone’s path. Focus on connections, not favors.
2. Assess & Plan
Start with who you know. Use a tracker to stay organized. Want to meet more people? Try LinkedIn, HeelsEngage, or ask for introductions.
The Career Center also offer many networking events for students including Snack and Chats, Information Sessions, Career Fairs, Alumni Panels, and Metro Heels. Find out more about the events on our website or on Handshake!
3. Explore Digital Tools
- LinkedIn Alumni: Use the UNC Alumni Tool.
- HeelsEngage: Connect with alumni who want to support students.
- Handshake: See who’s hiring and willing to connect!
4. Reach Out & Follow Through
Craft a short intro (who you are + why you’re reaching out). Ask to chat for 15–20 minutes to learn more about their path. Reach out to at least 3-5 people within the company you are applying to; however, don’t get too discouraged if you don’t hear back. Don’t let that deter you from applying!
Example:
“Hi Jordan! I’m a UNC student studying Environmental Science. I saw your work in sustainable urban planning and would love to hear how you got started. Are you open to a quick call next week?”
5. Attend Career Center Events
The career center is also here to help you build your network. We can help you learn more about networking through one-on-one appointments and/or workshops. We also offer various networking opportunities throughout the semester such as:
- Industry Snack and Chats
- Career Fairs
- Employer Information Sessions
- Pre-Fair Preparation and Networking Events
INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS
These are casual conversations to learn more—not job interviews. Ask about:
- A typical day in their role
- Challenges and favorite parts of their work
- How they started their career
- Advice they’d give a student like you
Don’t forget: Send a thank-you note! Mention something specific you enjoyed!
KEEP THE CONNECTION ALIVE
- Send a quick check-in every few months
- Share an article or congrats on a milestone
- Show genuine interest—they’ll remember that!
